Franklin Cudjoe, President of IMANI Africa, has accused the government of sponsoring illegal mining activities, also known as galamsey.
His comments come after President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo requested organized labour to postpone its planned strike, set for October 10, in order to give the government more time to address their demands.
During a closed-door meeting on Thursday, October 3, President Akufo-Addo assured union leaders of his commitment to resolving the issues at hand, asking for patience.
However, Franklin Cudjoe, in an interview with 3FM’s Beatrice Adu on Midday Live on October 4, expressed frustration, stating that the president has failed to deliver on his promises to tackle galamsey, despite earlier vows to crack down on the issue.
“Is it not this same president who boasted he would deal with this matter? He wasted our money, spending $3 million on drones. We don’t know where that money has flown to. As we speak, this is state-sponsored illegal mining. Let’s not joke and make it sound as though it’s something light we are dealing with,” Cudjoe remarked.
His criticism reflects growing dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of the illegal mining crisis, a significant environmental and economic issue in Ghana.
