The busy Accra-Aflao highway has recorded another dark moment after a fatal crash claimed thirteen precious lives at MotherKope.
According to official updates from the Ghana National Fire Service, eighteen other passengers sustained varying degrees of injury during the morning disaster.
The heartbreaking incident occurred near God’s Love Herbal Clinic when two commercial vehicles moving in opposite directions collided head-on.
A Toyota Hiace travelling from Accra towards Aflao collided with a Ford Transit moving from the opposite direction towards Accra.
Divisional Officer Grade II Ebenezer Yenzu, the Tema Regional Public Relations Officer for the GNFS, explained the actual cause of the accident.
Preliminary investigations show that the front of the Ford Transit crashed directly into the side of the Hiace right on a hill.
The impact was so severe that the front and doors of the Hiace were completely mangled while the Ford Transit suffered massive wreckage.
Firefighters from the Sege fire station responded swiftly after receiving a distress call at precisely 5:58 a.m.
The rescue team arrived at the accident scene within minutes to pull trapped passengers out of the mangled metals.
All eighteen injured persons were rushed immediately to the Sege Polyclinic for urgent medical treatment.
Some victims who required extra medical attention were later transferred to the Ada East District Hospital at FaithKope.
Security personnel and fire crews worked tirelessly to clear vehicle debris and spilled blood from the asphalt.
Normal traffic flow has since been restored on that stretch of the road to allow smooth movement for commuters.
Road safety advocates are once again reminding drivers plying major national highways to exercise maximum caution on hills and sharp curves.
