So, the situation in the Middle East just got a bit more complicated. On August 3, 2026, Iran executed two of its own citizens—Omid Behzad and Pouria Safvat. Why? The Iranian state media is pointing fingers at Israel, claiming these guys were spies working for Mossad.
According to Mizan News Agency, which is closely tied to Iran’s judiciary, Behzad and Safvat were secretly hanged at dawn. The authorities say they sent sensitive military coordinates, photos, and intel directly to Israel. This wasn’t just a random act; they are accused of sharing this crucial data during recent conflicts, including the recent U.S. and Israeli strikes that started in late February and the 12-day war back in June 2025.
State TV even aired footage and screenshots of messages they allegedly sent. Fars News Agency reported that one message directly addressed a handler, saying they had video of forces firing at a drone, but the “internet is weak.”
However, human rights groups like the Hengaw Organization are raising massive red flags. They claim the men were held in secret, denied a fair trial or their own lawyers, and that their televised confessions were literally beaten out of them through torture. Hengaw also questioned how they could send anything given the heavy internet blackouts during the wars.
This isn’t an isolated incident. Iran has seriously ramped up its executions lately, especially for what it calls “national security” offenses. Human Rights Watch says at least 50 people have been executed in just the last four months alone, and rights group Iran Human Rights noted a staggering 1,500 executions last year.
The timing is tense. The U.S. and Iran have been exchanging military blows recently, and this just adds more fuel to a fire that everyone is desperately trying to put out.
