So, the highly anticipated trial of popular Ghanaian social media influencer Frederick Kumi, better known as Abu Trica, has hit a major roadblock. The United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio has officially declared his case “complex,” meaning the trial date originally set for September 8, 2026, has been pushed back.
It looks like the prosecution has a mountain of evidence. According to a court order from July 30, 2026, Judge John R. Adams approved a request from Kumi’s defense team for more time. They argued that the U.S. government handed over an massive amount of discovery materials. Honestly, it’s so voluminous that the defense needs extra time just to organize and carefully review everything to prepare a proper defense, especially since Kumi is currently in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
The court agreed that hitting pause serves the “interests of justice.” By declaring the case complex, they’ve waived Kumi’s rights under the Speedy Trial Act, giving both sides some much-needed breathing room. Even Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian McDonough, who is leading the prosecution, didn’t object to giving the defense more time.
If you’ve been following the story, you’ll know Abu Trica was extradited from Ghana to the US in July. He’s facing some serious federal charges, including conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering conspiracy, related to an alleged romance fraud scheme targeting elderly Americans. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
We won’t know the new trial dates until a pretrial hearing on August 25, 2026. Until then, Abu Trica’s legal team has a ton of reading to do!
