In a high-profile legal decision, the Supreme Court of Ghana has quashed the bench warrant issued in January 2020 for the arrest of US-based Ghanaian political commentator, Kevin Ekow Baidoo Taylor.

The ruling was passed by a 4-1 majority, effectively declaring Taylor a free man after nearly five years of being considered a fugitive in Ghana’s legal system.
The bench warrant, issued by Justice Eric Kyei Baffour, stemmed from alleged contemptuous remarks made by Taylor against the judge, who was then presiding over sensitive criminal trials. Kevin Taylor’s legal counsel has since responded, stating:
“We are happy with the Supreme Court’s decision, and our client is a free man now.”

Kevin Taylor Appears in Ghana Despite “Red List” Status
One of the biggest questions that has emerged in the wake of this ruling is how Kevin Taylor managed to enter Ghana’s jurisdiction while an active arrest warrant was supposedly in effect and his name was on a “red list”.
Many Ghanaians on social media are baffled that a figure as controversial and vocal as Taylor could have entered the country undetected, appearing in court without being arrested. Was there a breakdown in the country’s security and immigration systems? Or was his entry deliberately facilitated?
This has sparked concerns that the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the political party currently in power under former President John Dramani Mahama, may have used state resources and institutions to protect a known ally and critic of the opposition.
