Former President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to reintroduce road tolls in Ghana as part of his policy direction to improve road infrastructure and generate revenue.

Speaking during a policy address in Accra, Mahama revealed that his next administration will roll out a fully automated toll collection system aimed at enhancing efficiency, transparency, and accountability.

According to the former president, the new electronic toll system will be user-friendly and affordable, with a standard toll fee of GH¢1 for all motorists. This, he emphasized, is designed to ease the burden on drivers while ensuring the consistent flow of funds for road maintenance and construction.

“We are bringing back road tolls, but this time, it will be smart and efficient. No human interference. A simple GH¢1 toll per use will help us maintain our roads and support national development,” Mahama stated.

The announcement has sparked discussions across the country, especially following the controversial abolition of road tolls in 2021. Many Ghanaians have welcomed the idea of an automated system, citing the potential benefits for reducing traffic congestion and corruption at toll booths.

Mahama also assured the public that proceeds from the toll system will be properly managed and channeled into a dedicated Road Fund, with oversight mechanisms to prevent misappropriation.

The proposed automated tolling system is expected to be implemented using electronic tags, mobile payment options, and cameras for vehicle recognition — in line with global best practices in transport management.

If re-elected, Mahama plans to collaborate with local tech firms and international partners to ensure a smooth rollout of the system across major highways and entry points.

The return of tolls with a GH¢1 fixed charge is seen by many as a strategic move to boost domestic revenue and improve road infrastructure while embracing modern technology.
