Applicants who have yet to receive their cards are strongly encouraged to visit their respective district or regional NIA offices to collect them immediately.
This nationwide effort aims to improve the efficiency of card distribution and ensure that all registered Ghanaians gain access to the Ghana Card, a key identification document for daily transactions and services.
Thousands of Cards Remain Uncollected
According to the NIA, thousands of Ghana Cards—already printed and delivered to district offices—remain unclaimed. These cards were issued during:
- Mass registration campaigns
- Institutional and mobile registration exercises
- Correction and reprint requests
“Our offices are overwhelmed with uncollected Ghana Cards,” an NIA official stated. “We are urging all applicants to check in and collect theirs as soon as possible.”

Why the Ghana Card Is Essential
The Ghana Card has become a mandatory document for a wide range of services and official processes. Here’s why collecting your card is important:
- Required for SIM card registration and mobile money services
- Needed to open bank accounts or access financial services
- Links to systems like SSNIT, NHIS, GRA, and voter registration
- Enables travel within the ECOWAS region
Without the Ghana Card, access to essential services may be delayed or completely restricted.

What Caused the Backlog?
Several issues led to the buildup of uncollected cards:
- High volume of registrations during SIM deadlines and national rollouts
- Relocation of applicants who can no longer access their original district offices
- Limited public awareness and follow-up communication from the NIA
- Lack of confirmation SMS to notify applicants of card readiness
The NIA has since intensified its public information campaign via radio, community outreach, and local authorities to notify applicants across all regions.
How to Check If Your Ghana Card Is Ready
To verify whether your card is available for pickup:
- Visit the district NIA office where you registered
- Call the NIA hotline or inquire through official regional contacts
- Check for SMS notifications or radio announcements from your area
What You’ll Need to Collect Your Card
When visiting your district office, come with:

- A valid ID document (passport, driver’s license, etc.) if needed
- Any official documents regarding corrections or reapplications
NIA Prepares for New Registrations
With more Ghanaians turning 15 and becoming eligible for national ID, the NIA is preparing for another wave of registrations. Clearing existing backlogs will allow for smoother processing and shorter wait times for new applicants.
“We need the space and capacity to accommodate new applicants,” the NIA added. “It’s in everyone’s best interest to collect cards that are already printed.”
