A US federal court in New York has handed Ghanaian national Derrick Van Yeboah an 85 month prison sentence for his involvement in a massive international romance scam and business email compromise scheme.
According to official US prosecutorial statements, the wider criminal network defrauded unsuspecting victims of more than $100 million. Federal investigators confirmed that Van Yeboah directly facilitated the theft of over $10 million through deceptive online romance operations.
The federal judge ordered Van Yeboah to forfeit more than $10.1 million in stolen assets alongside his seven year and one month prison term. Upon completing his prison sentence, he will serve a mandatory period of supervised release under strict federal monitoring.
Isaac Oduro Boateng, popularly known as Kofi Boat, operated as a key accomplice within the same Ghana based fraud syndicate. US law enforcement authorities confirmed that Kofi Boat currently remains in custody as he awaits his formal court sentencing.
This sentencing reflects an intensifying law enforcement crackdown by the United States Department of Justice against cross border cybercrime networks. Federal agencies continue collaborating with international security partners to protect vulnerable individuals and dismantle transnational financial crime syndicates operating across West Africa.
