The Ghana Police Service has announced a temporary diversion of traffic on the Accra-Kumasi Highway following a road crash involving a heavily loaded articulated truck at Birimso Bridge in the Eastern Region.
The accident has resulted in a complete blockage of the highway, disrupting traffic in both directions and affecting hundreds of motorists travelling between Accra and Kumasi, two of Ghana’s busiest commercial centres.
According to the Police, the crash left the articulated truck stranded across the road, making the highway impassable for vehicles travelling in either direction.

In a statement shared on its official Facebook page on Saturday, July 18, the Ghana Police Service said officers from the Eastern South Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) stationed at Kibi had been deployed to the scene to manage traffic and coordinate efforts to restore the smooth movement of vehicles.
The Police explained that traffic diversions began at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday to ease congestion and reduce the impact of the blockage while recovery operations continued.
Under the temporary traffic management plan, motorists travelling from Kumasi towards Accra are being diverted through Kibi at Nsutam, while drivers travelling from Accra towards Kumasi are being redirected at Apedwa.
Police officers have been stationed along the diversion routes to guide motorists and help maintain order as traffic builds up on alternative roads.
The Ghana Police Service has appealed to all road users to cooperate with officers directing traffic and to strictly follow the temporary diversion signs until the affected section of the highway is reopened.
Authorities said the diversions are necessary to allow emergency teams and recovery personnel enough space to remove the damaged truck and clear the roadway safely.
Although the Police confirmed the crash, they did not immediately provide information about the cause of the accident.
Officials have also not announced whether there were any injuries or fatalities resulting from the incident.
Similarly, no details have been released regarding the condition of the truck driver or whether other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The extent of damage to the articulated truck and Birimso Bridge has also not been disclosed.
Emergency responders and recovery teams remain at the scene as efforts continue to remove the obstruction and restore normal traffic flow.
Motorists travelling through the area have been advised to remain patient as recovery work may take several hours depending on the complexity of the operation.
The Accra Kumasi Highway is one of Ghana’s most important transport corridors. It connects the national capital with the Ashanti Region and serves as a major route for passenger transport, commercial vehicles and the movement of goods across the country.
Thousands of vehicles use the highway every day, making it a vital link for businesses, traders, transport operators and travellers.
Because of its importance, any blockage on the route often causes significant traffic delays and affects the transportation of goods between southern and northern Ghana.
Large trucks carrying cargo frequently use the highway, and accidents involving articulated vehicles can be particularly challenging because of their size and weight.
Removing such vehicles usually requires heavy recovery equipment and careful traffic management to ensure the safety of emergency workers and motorists.
The Police have encouraged drivers approaching the affected area to slow down, remain alert and obey all traffic instructions.
Motorists using the diversion routes have also been advised to exercise caution, as increased traffic volumes may lead to congestion on the alternative roads.
Drivers are urged to avoid dangerous overtaking, speeding and other risky driving behaviours that could lead to additional accidents while traffic is being redirected.

The Ghana Police Service said it remains committed to ensuring public safety and restoring normal traffic movement as quickly as possible.
Traffic officers will continue to monitor the diversion routes and provide assistance to motorists until the highway is fully reopened.
Authorities are expected to issue further updates once the articulated truck has been removed and the road is declared safe for normal use.
For now, motorists planning to travel between Accra and Kumasi are advised to factor additional travel time into their journeys and stay informed through official Police announcements regarding the progress of the recovery operation.
The Police have thanked members of the public for their patience and cooperation as efforts continue to clear the scene and reopen one of Ghana’s busiest highways.
