Giving birth should bring pure joy to every home instead of heartbreaking sorrow. Yet recent health data shows that the Ashanti Region records the highest maternal mortality numbers in Ghana. Families naturally feel worried when mothers lose their lives during childbirth. Health authorities are stepping up to explain why these alarming numbers keep rising.
Official figures from the regional directorate indicate a ratio increase from 195.6 deaths per 100000 live births in 2024 to 196.7 in 2025. The region accounts for nearly a quarter of all maternal deaths nationwide. Deputy Minister of Health Dr Grace Ayensu Danquah notes that Ghana aims for 70 deaths per 100000 live births under global targets. Missing this mark by a wide margin leaves the nation racing against time before 2030.
Many people quickly point accusing fingers at major facilities like Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. However regional health director Dr Fred Adomako Boateng clarifies that 92 percent of recorded fatalities actually arrive from outside centers.
Critical patients often reach referral hospitals only after their medical conditions have deteriorated severely. Delayed transport and uncoordinated referrals turn manageable pregnancy complications into fatal emergencies.
Government and health experts are deploying practical solutions to fix these system bottlenecks. New interventions include clinical mentorship programs and virtual labor room systems to support peripheral clinics.
Catching complications early will save precious lives before mothers require emergency transfers. Protecting maternal health remains a shared national duty that requires total commitment from everyone.
