Every morning and evening, traveling into Accra can test your patience as heavy gridlock builds up on major highways.
Commuters trapped in commercial vehicles or private cars often watch precious hours slip away before reaching the central business district. To solve this headache, state authorities have announced a smart transport intervention starting September 29, 2026, to keep workers moving smoothly.
Under this new arrangement, state-owned Aayalolo buses will operate on designated counterflow lanes during peak morning and evening hours. These special priority routes cover busy corridors including Amasaman, Pokuase, Kasoa, and Adenta. By traveling against the normal flow of general traffic, these high-capacity buses can bypass the usual bottlenecks that frustrate everyday drivers.
To keep the system running smoothly, strict rules apply to other motorists using these major highways during operational times. Okadas, regular taxis, trotros, and private vehicles are completely barred from entering the designated Aayalolo lanes. Officers from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department will be stationed at major intersections to enforce compliance and direct traffic.
This bold move aims to encourage more people to ditch personal cars and embrace reliable public mass transit. When public transport becomes faster than driving alone, more commuters will gladly jump on board to save money and time. Motorists are therefore advised to respect the new traffic markings and avoid the dedicated lanes to prevent trouble with law enforcement.
