Traditional leaders and residents of Yaw Adipa in the Nsawam-Adoagyiri Constituency are demanding an immediate halt to the dumping of refuse transported daily from Accra.
Locals lament that the continuous offloading of garbage has heavily polluted local streams. This mess has turned precious community water sources into unusable brown sludge. People can no longer rely on these streams for their normal household chores.
The pollution has also disrupted age-old cultural practices because elders cannot perform vital traditional rites like pouring libation with clean water. Bringing city refuse to our backyard without proper consultation is a bitter pill to swallow. Community members feel sidelined in decisions affecting their daily survival and health. Authorities must step in urgently before things get out of hand.
Local leaders emphasize that protecting the environment should not be treated like a game of musical chairs. Shifting refuse from urban centers to quiet towns destroys rural ecosystems. Government agencies need to engage stakeholders transparently instead of imposing dumpsites on vulnerable communities. A sustainable sanitation plan requires respect for indigenous populations and total protection of natural water bodies.
