The Bank of Ghana is set to launch an upgraded family of notes known as the Heritage Series starting November 3, 2026. Governor Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama announced this update during the 132nd Monetary Policy Committee press briefing in Accra. The rollout covers all current denominations including the return of the GH¢2 note alongside the GH¢1, GH¢5, GH¢10, GH¢20, GH¢50, GH¢100, and GH¢200 notes.
This major update has become necessary because the existing core banknote designs have stayed in circulation for over two decades. Advanced technology and shifting security standards mean the central bank must modernise the currency to keep counterfeiting at bay. These fresh designs will celebrate Ghana’s rich culture, national history, and iconic heroes while offering improved physical durability.
Everyday market traders, drivers, and corporate bodies must note that current banknotes will not become worthless overnight. The incoming Heritage Series will co-circulate smoothly alongside existing legal tender notes across all local banks and markets. Citizens do not need to panic or rush to financial institutions for chaotic cash swaps when the official launch date arrives.
The central bank has also urged the public to stop abusing physical cash through rough handling, stapling, writing, or making decorative money bouquets. Protecting currency integrity remains a collective civic duty that drastically reduces heavy replacement printing costs for the nation. Ghanaians should embrace these upcoming security-enhanced notes with deep national pride when they finally hit circulation.
