Former Member of Parliament for Odododiodioo, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has expressed confidence in winning the National Democratic Congress (NDC) national chairmanship race as the party prepares for its internal elections.
Vanderpuye made the declaration during a visit to the Okaikwei South constituency on Sunday, October 25, 2026, as part of his engagements with party members ahead of the national executive elections.
He described the reception he had received during his constituency visits as positive, saying the campaign had so far been peaceful and characterised by a family atmosphere.
According to him, Okaikwei South was the third constituency he had visited, following earlier engagements in Odododiodioo and Korle Klottey.
“This is my third constituency visit. I’ve been to Odododiodioo, I passed through Korle Klottey and I’m here, and so far everything is smooth. We show you a family atmosphere,” he said.
Vanderpuye Predicts Victory in NDC Chairmanship Contest
The former legislator said he believed he would emerge as the next national chairman when the party concludes its internal election process.
He indicated that the regional elections were scheduled for November 14, 2026, while the national executive elections were expected to take place on December 19, 2026.
“Come November 14, we will have the regional elections, and then later, on December 19, we’ll have the national elections, which I believe I will make it as National Chairman,” Vanderpuye stated.
His campaign comes at a time when the NDC is preparing to elect leaders who will oversee the party’s affairs and help coordinate its activities ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Vanderpuye’s confidence reflects his stated expectations about the contest. The final outcome, however, will depend on the party’s voting process and the decisions of its delegates.
Sammy Gyamfi Comments Generate Discussion
Vanderpuye’s chairmanship campaign has also attracted attention following comments he made about Sammy Gyamfi, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod).
The discussion followed a public exchange involving Gyamfi and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin over claims concerning the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme and an alleged US$1.7 billion loss.
During a television discussion, Vanderpuye acknowledged Gyamfi’s communication skills but indicated that he would have handled the exchange differently, particularly regarding the tone used during a public engagement.
His remarks generated discussion within the party and prompted questions about whether the controversy could affect his campaign.
Vanderpuye subsequently apologised to Gyamfi and the NDC, explaining that his comments were not intended to undermine the GoldBod chief executive.
The issue has since become part of the public conversation surrounding his chairmanship bid, although its effect on the views of party delegates remains unclear.
Call for Peaceful Party Elections
As the NDC approaches its regional and national executive elections, the importance of maintaining unity among party members remains a key concern.
Internal elections can generate disagreements among candidates and their supporters, making cooperation and respect for the party’s electoral process important.
For Vanderpuye, the constituency visits provide an opportunity to engage party members directly as he seeks support for his ambition to lead the party at the national level.
The December 19 national executive elections are expected to determine who takes up the NDC national chairmanship, alongside other leadership positions.
Until the delegates cast their votes and the results are officially declared, the chairmanship contest remains open.
