Minority Leader for the NPP, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has dropped a massive political bombshell regarding the judiciary in Ghana. He stated clearly that the New Patriotic Party will bring back Justice Gertrude Torkornoo as Chief Justice if they return to power. According to him, her removal from office was completely unfair and lacked proper procedural backing.

Speaking strongly on the matter, Afenyo-Markin alleged that a grand conspiracy involving top legal figures engineered her exit. He argued that the investigative report used against her was incomplete before the constitutional process concluded. Such drastic actions against the head of the judiciary have left many legal minds talking across the country.

Justice Torkornoo made history in June 2023 as the first head of Ghana’s judiciary under the Fourth Republic to face removal. Citizens and civil society groups continue debating whether the Article 146 process followed due diligence. Political promises surrounding judicial independence will definitely shape upcoming national conversations as stakeholders watch closely.
