Cristiano Ronaldo has opened up about his recent disagreement with Portugal coach Roberto Martínez.
Ronaldo said the coach broke his word to him on more than one occasion.
The disagreement followed a match in which Ronaldo was asked to warm up but was not brought onto the pitch.
Ronaldo said he was frustrated after the game and wanted to be alone. He also admitted that he made a mistake by not going to greet the Portuguese fans.
“I apologise to the Portuguese who supported us intensely there,” Ronaldo said.
He also apologised to fans who may have travelled to watch him and felt disappointed by his actions.
Ronaldo said that 48 hours later, he met with Martínez and Simão Coutinho to discuss what had happened.
He described the meeting as open and direct. According to Ronaldo, they agreed that the coach would explain the situation publicly.
Ronaldo said the coach would clarify that he had never asked to play. He also said the coach had been the one who proposed a plan for his involvement with the national team.
Ronaldo said he accepted the plan and never questioned the coach’s decisions.
He added that Martínez admitted it was a mistake to ask him to warm up and then not bring him into the game.
According to Ronaldo, the coach also told him that he wanted him to remain part of the Portugal national team.
The agreement was later discussed during a video conference involving the coach, Simão Coutinho and Tiago Craveiro.
Ronaldo said a short document was prepared to summarise what had been agreed.
However, he became disappointed when Martínez later addressed the issue at a press conference.
Ronaldo claimed that the coach’s public comments were very different from what they had discussed privately.
He described the coach’s attitude during the press conference as aggressive and said it did not reflect their private conversation.
Ronaldo stressed that the agreement did not require the coach to apologise to him.
For Ronaldo, the main issue was that the coach failed to keep the promise made during their private meeting.
“It was the second time he had broken his word to me,” Ronaldo said.
Ronaldo also accepted responsibility for not greeting the fans after the match.
He described his reaction as a moment of frustration and apologised to those who felt disappointed.
Despite the incident, Ronaldo said his reaction does not change the affection and respect he has shown towards Portuguese supporters throughout his international career.
