Ghana’s Black Stars have a new interim technical team, and supporters will be hoping this change brings fresh energy to the national team.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA), working with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, has appointed Swedish coach Kim Lars Björkegren to lead the team for its November 2026 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Somalia. He will work alongside assistant coaches Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram, while former Ghana goalkeeper Fatawu Dauda takes charge of the goalkeepers. The GFA announced the arrangement on October 16, 2026, following the recommendation of the Black Stars Coach Search Committee. The appointment comes at a crucial time, as Ghana looks to improve its results and rebuild confidence among supporters. Read the official GFA announcement.

Who Is Kim Lars Björkegren, the New Interim Coach?

Kim Lars Björkegren brings international coaching experience to the Black Stars. Before this appointment, he coached Ghana’s senior women’s national team, the Black Queens. His work with the Black Queens included helping Ghana secure a bronze medal at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and qualify for the 2026 edition. His appointment gives the men’s team a coach who already understands Ghanaian football and the demands of managing a national side. However, coaching the Black Stars presents a different challenge, especially with the pressure to deliver results in competitive matches. His immediate task is to prepare the players properly, make sound tactical decisions and help Ghana approach the Somalia fixtures with confidence. Supporters will be watching to see how quickly he can organise the team and get the best out of the available players.

Ibrahim Tanko, Godwin Attram and Fatawu Dauda

The supporting coaches will also play important roles in the new Black Stars technical team. Ibrahim Tanko brings experience as a former Ghana international and coach. His knowledge of Ghanaian players and the local football environment could help the team prepare effectively. Godwin Attram, another former Ghana international, has worked as a coach at club and national youth level. He previously managed Accra Great Olympics and brings experience in player development and team management. Fatawu Dauda, a former Black Stars goalkeeper, will handle the goalkeepers. His experience between the posts at international level could help him guide the team’s goalkeepers on positioning, communication and decision making. Together, the four coaches offer a combination of international experience and local knowledge. Their challenge is to turn that experience into better performances on the pitch.

What Impact Could the New Technical Team Have?

The interim team’s biggest responsibility is to prepare Ghana for the November AFCON qualifiers against Somalia. The coaching staff must assess players, develop an effective game plan and help the squad respond positively after a difficult start to the qualifying campaign. Ghana parted ways with Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz after defeats to Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia in the opening two qualifiers. Those results increased the pressure on the national team to improve. The new coaches must therefore focus on defensive organisation, attacking efficiency, fitness and team unity. They must also make smart selection decisions and give players clear roles. Still, a new coaching team cannot guarantee immediate success. Results will depend on preparation, player performance and execution during the matches.

A Temporary Appointment With a Big Responsibility

The GFA has made it clear that this interim arrangement applies specifically to the November fixtures. The Black Stars Coach Search Committee will continue its work to identify a permanent head coach for the team. This gives the association time to complete its recruitment process while ensuring that the players have coaches preparing them for their next assignments. For Ghanaian supporters, the hope is simple: better performances, stronger team spirit and results that restore confidence in the Black Stars. Björkegren and his assistants now have an opportunity to show what they can do. The real test will come when the team steps onto the pitch against Somalia.
