The Minority in Parliament has renewed its call for an independent audit of funds used by the Ministry of Finance to evacuate Ghanaians from South Africa. The demand follows the ministry’s response to earlier concerns about the expenditure. The Minority says the government must provide clear records showing how officials spent the money.
Hon. Abu Jinapor has criticised the response from the Majority, arguing that it focuses on attacking Minority members instead of addressing their questions. According to him, the issue is about accountability, not personal disagreements between politicians. He wants the relevant authorities to provide records that explain the expenditure and allow the public to understand how the funds were used.
Minority Questions Government Spending
The demand for an independent audit puts public financial accountability at the centre of the debate. An audit can help establish how much money officials released, what they spent it on, and whether the spending followed the required procedures. It can also help identify any gaps in documentation that need further explanation.
However, calling for an audit does not automatically mean that wrongdoing has occurred. The process should establish the facts through financial records and other relevant evidence. The Ministry of Finance’s detailed response, together with any available audit findings, would help the public assess the matter fairly.
Why an Independent Audit Matters
Public funds come from national resources, so Ghanaians have a legitimate interest in knowing how officials use them. Evacuation exercises can involve transport, accommodation, logistics and other costs. A transparent account would help explain which expenses arose during the operation and how officials authorised the payments.
The next important step is to establish whether the ministry has provided the records requested by the Minority and whether an independent review will take place. Until verified documents or audit findings become available, the claims should remain allegations and calls for accountability rather than proof of financial misconduct.
For now, the disagreement highlights a basic issue in public service: when politicians raise questions about public spending, clear evidence should answer them. Ghanaians deserve facts about the evacuation funds, not just exchanges between the Majority and Minority.
