Ever heard of a boat trip going completely off the rails because of livestock? This unsettling event unfolded along the Isaka Kura-Tonka-Yeji route in the Pru East District of the Bono East Region.
A local canoe was navigating the waters while carrying six people, a tricycle, and a cow. Transporting animals on local water transport is common, but this specific cow decided it had enough of the journey mid-trip.
The animal suddenly began thrashing and struggling aggressively inside the confined wooden vessel. That unexpected chaos terrified two passengers on board. In a split-second reaction to the panicked animal, both passengers jumped straight into the deep water.
While one person managed to stay afloat or reach safety, 21-year-old Mathias Kpodovia tragically lost his life. The canoe operator, known locally as Promise, immediately raised the alarm. Local community members quickly organized a search party to scour the lake.

The Search: Locals spent several hours combing the waters of the Volta Lake for the missing young man.

The Recovery: Search teams eventually retrieved the lifeless body of Mathias Kpodovia from the water.

Police Action: Local law enforcement transported the deceased to the Matthias Hospital mortuary for further investigation.
IMO, mixing heavy cargo, motorbikes or tricycles, and live, unpredictable animals in a small canoe is a recipe for disaster. Water transport safety guidelines exist for a distinct reason, yet rural commuting often forces people to push safety boundaries.
