A major fire has broken out at Duraplast Company in Avenor, Accra’s North Industrial Area, sending thick smoke into the sky and raising serious concerns among residents and businesses in the area.
The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation confirmed the fire on October 1, 2026, saying firefighters were working to contain the flames while the cause remained unknown.
Duraplast is located along Dadeban Road in the North Industrial Area and manufactures products including uPVC, PVC and HDPE pipes and fittings. The company has operated in Ghana for decades, with its official company profile stating that it began operations in 1969. The location also sits within a busy industrial environment where several businesses operate close to one another, making any major fire a serious concern for surrounding properties.
Fire Spreads As Residents Raise Alarm
Eyewitness accounts circulating from the scene claim the fire started on a smaller scale before becoming much more serious. One resident alleged that firefighters were contacted early but arrived after the blaze had already grown significantly. The resident also claimed that several children were trapped inside one of the affected structures, including a two week old baby.
Those claims about deaths have not yet been independently confirmed by an official authority, so they should be treated with caution as emergency teams continue their work. Reports also indicate that homes, personal belongings and livestock may have been affected, while narrow access routes in the area have reportedly made it difficult for firefighting vehicles to reach some locations.
The Ghana National Fire Service has deployed personnel to the scene, while police officers are assisting with security and managing the situation. A separate report also said the National Ambulance Service had been placed on standby. The extent of the damage and the official cause of the fire remain unclear as operations continue.
Accra Fire Raises Fresh Emergency Concerns
The Duraplast fire has once again brought attention to the challenges that can arise when a major emergency happens in a densely built industrial area. When factories, warehouses, homes and businesses operate close together, a fire can spread quickly if emergency access becomes difficult.
For now, the priority remains containing the blaze and accounting for anyone who may have been affected. Authorities will also need to establish what caused the fire and provide verified information about casualties and property damage. Until those findings are released, claims circulating on social media and from individual eyewitnesses should not be treated as confirmed facts.
The Duraplast fire in Accra remains a developing story. Residents and businesses around the North Industrial Area are being urged to follow instructions from emergency personnel as firefighters continue efforts to bring the situation under control.
