Lionel Messi has officially brought his Argentina national team career to an emotional end after more than two decades in the famous blue and white shirt.
Messi made his final appearance for Argentina on October 6, 2026, as the world champions defeated Benin 3–0 at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires. He scored from the penalty spot and provided two assists in his farewell match.
The 39-year-old leaves Argentina as the country’s most-capped player and all-time leading scorer. He finished with 208 appearances and 126 international goals.
His international career included some of the biggest achievements in Argentine football. Messi helped Argentina win the FIFA World Cup, two Copa América titles and the Finalissima.

After his final match, Messi reflected on his long relationship with Argentina and the effort he gave to the national team.
“I never gave up for this shirt. Always fighting, pushing and giving my best,” Messi said.
“For 20 years, I gave my best for Argentina.”
His final night at the Monumental was filled with emotional tributes from fans, teammates and the football community.
Messi leaves behind a remarkable international legacy and closes one of the greatest chapters in Argentina’s football history.
