Weekend plans in town often get scattered when unexpected light troubles strike your home. Residents across parts of the Greater Accra Region are preparing for a long blackout this Sunday. The Ghana Grid Company Limited announced a major fourteen hour power interruption starting today August 16 2026.
Engineers urgently need this massive time window to replace a damaged transmission tower located at Ashaiman. A careless fuel tanker exploded recently while some workers were welding its tank inside the protected zone. That sudden blast completely wrecked the heavy metal structure supporting the main power grid lines.
Power will stay completely off from 3:30 in the morning until 6:00 in the evening to protect workers. Technical teams must finish these emergency restoration works safely to restore full stability to the Tema Achimota high voltage line. Affected families must stock up on ice and prepare early to avoid heavy frustrations.
Energy authorities are pointing fingers straight at illegal structures built dangerously close to high voltage corridors. The Minister for Energy and Green Transition Dr John Abdulai Jinapor recently inspected these protected zones across the country. He ordered all encroachers to pack their belongings and vacate the affected areas within one month.
The law remains very strict against anyone building or operating businesses near transmission lines under existing legislation. Officials cited the Transmission Line Protection Regulations of 1967 and its later amendments. Authorities will work hand in hand with security agencies and local assemblies after the deadline to clear all unauthorized structures completely.
