Grid troubles have a special way of ruining a peaceful weekend for everybody in town. Residents across parts of Accra are bracing themselves for a long blackout this Sunday. A sudden accident has forced power authorities to switch off the lights for urgent repairs.
The Ghana Grid Company announced an emergency power interruption slated for Sunday August 16 2026. Engineers need to replace a damaged transmission tower on the Tema Achimota line based at Ashaiman. A careless fuel tanker explosion during welding work inside the protected zone wrecked the heavy structure.
Power will stay off from 3:30am in the morning until 6:00pm in the evening to keep workers safe. GRIDCo engineers need this massive window to restore full integrity to the crucial power lines. Affected customers must prepare their homes and freeze their groceries early to avoid heavy frustrations.
Authorities are pointing fingers straight at illegal structures placed dangerously close to high voltage lines. Energy and Green Transition Minister John Abdulai Jinapor ordered all encroachers to vacate those protected corridors within one month. Law enforcement officers will clear all unauthorized structures after the strict deadline expires completely.
