Ghanaian para athletics sensation Hayford Addai delivered an inspiring performance at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. The seventeen year old sprinter produced a personal best time of 10.99 seconds in the Men 100m T47 final.
Even though Addai finished fifth in the race, his performance created history for Ghanaian sports. He officially became the first Ghanaian T47 sprinter to break the eleven second barrier on an international stage.
The young sprinter entered the competition with a personal record of 11.09 seconds. He showed amazing maturity against elite international runners by cutting 0.10 seconds off his previous best mark in Glasgow.
India’s Dilip Mahadu Gavit won gold in the event, while Mohammed Basil Morssinganakath earned silver for India. England’s Kevin Santos secured the bronze medal after a very tight finish.
Addai’s progress over the past year has been truly impressive. He previously won gold medals at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix in Dubai and another top medal in Rabat to qualify for the Commonwealth Games.
The National Paralympic Committee of Ghana praised the young athlete for his discipline and steady preparation. The committee noted that his performance shows Ghana’s growing strength in global para athletics.
Although he missed the podium this time, Addai leaves Scotland with something powerful. His sub 11 second achievement gives him huge confidence as he prepares for future competitions like the World Para Athletics Championships and the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games.
