Yesterday started like any normal day in Kasoa until things went completely south for Mimi and her family. Her brother got caught up in a bitter misunderstanding with his former wife over personal matters. Instead of a peaceful resolution, things escalated quickly when the local police stepped in. Mimi claims that officers did not just effect an arrest, but they descended on him with heavy slaps and severe beatings right before hauling him away. Watching a loved one being manhandled like a common criminal is a painful experience that no Ghanaian family should ever endure.
Every citizen in this country deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, no matter how heated a domestic dispute gets. The Ghana Police Service has a mandate to protect and serve, not to turn interrogation sessions into boxing matches. Mimi is now using her voice to beg the Inspector General of Police and human rights organizations to step into this matter. When law enforcement officers take the law into their own hands, it shakes public confidence in the entire justice system. We cannot sit back and pretend that brutality is normal policing because accountability matters.
