A five month old baby boy named Akwasi Banahene, who was abducted from the Asafo Market in Kumasi, has been safely rescued by police officers. The successful operational rescue ended days of agonizing anxiety for his traumatized family.
Joint security teams from the Ejisu Police Division and the Asokwa Police Command coordinated the swift intelligence led operation. Law enforcement officers intercepted the suspect at Ejisu while she allegedly attempted to flee the area with the stolen infant.
The abduction took place around 5:00 am at the Cape Coast Bus Terminal section within Asafo Market. The mother, Freda, a local food vendor, had placed her sleeping infant on a seat right in front of her market stall while setting up for the day.
A female suspect sitting near the store vanished with the child the moment the mother briefly turned away. The family alerted the Asokwa Police Station immediately, prompting a region wide security alert across public transport hubs.
Police intelligence units tracked the suspect’s movement to Ejisu, where tactical officers moved in to block her escape route. Officers arrested the female suspect, estimated to be between 37 and 40 years old, and rescued the baby unharmed.
Medical personnel evaluated young Akwasi Banahene and confirmed he remained in good health before reuniting him with his overjoyed parents. Police continue to interrogate the suspect in custody to uncover her full motives.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command commended the public for providing timely tips that assisted the swift rescue operation. Security officials advise parents and traders operating in crowded markets to maintain close supervision over young children at all times.
Law enforcement authorities reaffirm their firm determination to deal decisively with child stealing syndicates. Citizens should report any suspicious individuals around infants in transit terminals to the nearest police station immediately.
