Police officers have picked up some University Hall residents, popularly known as Conti Boys, at the New Patriotic Party Ashanti Regional elections grounds.
Elections in Ghana always come with plenty of ginger and heavy drama, but some supporters sometimes take things entirely out of hand.
These Conti boys reportedly trooped to the venue to show solid support for a contender named Paul Yandoh during the ongoing internal contest.
Things quickly turned dramatic when someone known as one of the Conti boys allegedly fired a loud knockout firecracker right in the middle of the grounds.
Such playful fireworks might sound like normal street vibes during festive seasons, but doing it at a crowded political gathering is a fast ticket to trouble.
According to official security reports from the Ghana Police Service, discharging firecrackers in public spaces without authorization causes unnecessary panic and breaches public peace.
Political grounds are already high tension zones where delegates and supporters are shouting slogans and arguing about candidates.
Adding loud explosive sounds to that mix is a dangerous game that can easily trigger stampes or false fears of gun violence.
The Ghana Police Service maintains strict guidelines on maintaining law and order during political gatherings to protect lives and property.
Security personnel on duty acted swiftly to restore calm and picked up the suspects to prevent total chaos from erupting at the venue. Elections are meant to be a battle of ideas and numbers rather than a contest of who can make the loudest noise with knockouts.
Party leaders and youth groups must always remember that peace is more valuable than any single victory or candidate.
The arrested Conti boys are expected to assist the police with investigations to establish who actually brought the prohibited item to the grounds.
As the matter unfolds, political stakeholders must educate their followers to respect public safety rules and keep campaign grounds safe for everyone.
