Four people, including a local commercial driver, lost their lives in a horrific road crash on the Kwahu Mountain Atibie road. A heavily loaded cargo trailer ascending the steep winding slope lost control and directly overturned onto an oncoming taxi.
The tragic collision happened on the Atibie stretch in the Eastern Region, leaving all four taxi occupants trapped beneath the heavy vehicle. Eyewitnesses and commuters rushed to assist, but the crushing weight killed all victims on the spot.
According to eye accounts from passersby, the articulated truck struggled up the steep mountain incline before unexpectedly rolling backward. The massive vehicle toppled directly onto the small taxi traveling behind it.
Bystanders immediately mobilised to pull the trapped victims out of the completely flattened taxi before emergency services arrived. Despite frantic rescue attempts, responders confirmed all four individuals died instantly inside the vehicle.
The severe collision blocked both lanes of the narrow Kwahu-Atibie mountain pass, causing massive vehicular gridlock. Dozens of private vehicles, commercial buses, and onlookers gathered as police officers secured the immediate area.
Police personnel and emergency teams worked to remove the overturned trailer, clear the road, and convey the deceased bodies to the mortuary. Local authorities reopened traffic access after safely clearing the crushed wreckage from the highway.
The heartbreaking tragedy highlights ongoing safety concerns surrounding heavy goods vehicles climbing steep mountain routes like Kwahu-Atibie. Transport operators continue to demand strict mechanical checks to avoid tragic brake failures on slopes.
Police investigators have launched official inquiries to determine whether mechanical failure or driver error caused the trailer to lose control. Motorists must exercise extreme caution, maintain safe trailing distances, and observe road warnings when navigating Kwahu Mountain.
