AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine has donated 400 waste bins and two waste collection tricycles valued at about GH¢660,000 to support sanitation and waste management efforts in the Obuasi Municipality and Obuasi East District.
The intervention is expected to strengthen waste collection and transportation systems, promote responsible waste disposal, and help reduce indiscriminate dumping in the two local authorities.
Under the initiative, each Assembly received 200 waste bins and one waste collection tricycle to support waste management activities within its communities.
The waste bins are expected to be strategically positioned at designated points to make it easier for residents to dispose of refuse properly. The tricycles, meanwhile, will support the collection and transportation of waste from communities to appropriate disposal locations.
The donation forms part of AngloGold Ashanti’s Keeping Obuasi Clean Campaign (KOCC), an initiative launched in 2019 to support improved sanitation and environmental management in the mining community.
It also aligns with the company’s 10-Year Socio-Economic Development Plan (SEDP), which identifies sanitation, water and strategic partnerships as key areas for sustainable community development.
Strengthening local waste collection
Waste management remains an important challenge for growing communities, where inadequate collection infrastructure can contribute to poor sanitation and indiscriminate disposal of refuse.
The provision of additional bins and collection equipment is expected to improve the capacity of the two local authorities to collect waste from communities and transport it more efficiently.
The intervention also provides residents with designated facilities for waste disposal, which could help reduce the amount of refuse dumped in unauthorised areas.
With 200 bins allocated to each Assembly, the local authorities will have additional infrastructure to support waste collection points in communities across the Obuasi area.
The waste collection tricycles are also expected to improve access to areas where larger waste collection vehicles might face difficulties operating.
This could make it easier for sanitation authorities and waste management operators to collect refuse from residential areas and other locations and transport it for proper disposal.
Part of wider community development efforts
AngloGold Ashanti said the initiative forms part of its broader efforts to contribute to the socio-economic development of communities around its operations.
The Keeping Obuasi Clean Campaign was introduced as part of efforts to promote cleaner communities and encourage responsible waste management among residents.
The campaign also supports the company’s wider development commitments under its 10-Year Socio-Economic Development Plan.
Sanitation is one of the key areas identified under the plan, alongside water and strategic partnerships aimed at promoting sustainable development in the Obuasi area.
The donation therefore represents both an investment in waste management infrastructure and an effort to strengthen collaboration between the mining company and local authorities.
Support for municipal assemblies
The distribution of the equipment to the Obuasi Municipal Assembly and Obuasi East District Assembly gives both local authorities additional resources to support their sanitation responsibilities.
Each Assembly receiving the same number of bins and one collection tricycle is expected to strengthen waste management operations across the two administrative areas.
The equipment could also support ongoing public education efforts by making proper waste disposal more practical for residents.
Effective waste management requires more than the provision of disposal facilities. Regular collection, transportation and proper disposal are also necessary to prevent waste from accumulating in communities.
The new equipment is therefore expected to complement existing waste management systems and improve the ability of the Assemblies to respond to sanitation needs.
Encouraging responsible waste disposal
The intervention is also expected to encourage residents to adopt more responsible waste disposal practices.
The availability of waste bins at designated locations could make it easier for households and businesses to dispose of refuse appropriately rather than dumping it along roadsides, drains or other unauthorised locations.
Improved waste collection could also contribute to cleaner public spaces and help reduce environmental and sanitation risks associated with poorly managed refuse.
For the Obuasi Municipality and Obuasi East District, the additional equipment comes as local authorities continue efforts to improve sanitation standards and maintain cleaner communities.
AngloGold Ashanti’s support demonstrates the role of partnerships between mining companies and local authorities in addressing community development challenges.
