What a way to kick off! Ghana’s Black Queens have shown they mean serious business at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). Playing in Casablanca, Morocco, our girls gave a stellar performance, beating tournament debutants Cape Verde 2-0 to take the top spot in Group D.
If you missed the match, no worries. Here’s the breakdown of how coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren’s squad laid down the law on the pitch.
Doris Boaduwaa Strikes Early
You know the Black Queens don’t play around! Just six minutes into the game, star forward Doris Boaduwaa found the back of the net. She connected with a sweet long pass from Portia Boakye and easily flicked it past the Cape Verde goalkeeper.
This early goal completely set the mood. It gave Ghana the confidence to control the game right from the start. Cape Verde tried to push back, but they quickly realized that playing against the Black Queens is not a joke.
A Second Goal Seals the Deal
After halftime, the Queens kept the heat on. The pressure was so intense that in the 53rd minute, Cape Verde’s Eleia Vieira accidentally scored an own goal. This was all thanks to a dangerous cross forced by our very own Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah.
The second goal settled any small nerves and basically locked in the three points for Ghana. Our defense was absolutely rock solid, with goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan pulling off some great saves to keep a clean sheet. Even when Cape Verde had their best chance later in the game, Konlan said, “Not today!”.
Looking Ahead: The Cameroon Clash
Coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren has to be proud. He made some smart substitutions late in the game, bringing on fresh legs like Princess Marfo and Evelyn Badu to keep the energy high. Defender Josephine Afua Kyerewaa Bonsu even walked away with the Woman of the Match award.
Now, the focus shifts. The next test is a massive Group D clash against Cameroon on Sunday, August 2. The team’s target is clear: get to the semi-finals, book a ticket to the 2027 World Cup, and win the WAFCON trophy.
