Mahama to Cut Sod for 40,000-Seater Sunyani Stadium

President John Dramani Mahama will perform a historic groundbreaking ceremony in Sunyani for the construction of a ultra-modern 40,000-seater sports stadium. The long-awaited project marks a massive victory for sports lovers and youth in the Bono Region.

The National Sports Authority (NSA) confirmed that government secured a vast 35-acre plot of land at Old Abesim for the FIFA-standard facility. Work will kick off officially following the President’s scheduled visit to the regional capital.

Bono Regional Public Relations Officer for the NSA, Senior Kwame Kusi, revealed that the multipurpose arena will host diverse sporting disciplines beyond football. Local athletes will finally gain access to world-class track, field, and indoor equipment.

For decades, sports fans in Sunyani relied heavily on the aged Coronation Park, which suffered frequent overcrowding and maintenance struggles. The new facility promises to put the region back on the international sports map.

Securing 35 acres of land at Old Abesim ensures the complex leaves ample room for parking, administrative blocks, and commercial ventures. Authorities plan to run the project on a strict timeline, aiming for a full public opening by 2029.

Meanwhile, officials clarified that contractors will simultaneously renovate and maintain the historic Sunyani Coronation Park. This dual approach keeps local domestic league fixtures running smoothly while primary construction moves forward.

Beyond hosting electric football matches, the new arena will stimulate local businesses, hotel accommodations, and transport services across Abesim and Sunyani. Major sporting events bring massive revenue into host towns, giving small traders vital income boosts.
