Russian Ambassador to Ghana, Andrei Ordash, has paid a courtesy call on President John Dramani Mahama at the Presidency in Accra, reaffirming the commitment of both countries to deepen diplomatic, economic and cultural cooperation.
According to a statement issued by the Russian Embassy, the meeting provided an opportunity for both sides to review the longstanding relationship between Ghana and Russia while exploring new areas of partnership. Discussions covered trade, investment, legal cooperation, cultural exchanges and preparations for the Third Russia–Africa Summit, which is scheduled to take place in Moscow on October 28 and 29, 2026.
The courtesy visit reflected the continued engagement between the two countries as they seek to strengthen bilateral relations through regular diplomatic dialogue. Both Ghana and Russia expressed their interest in expanding cooperation in sectors that could contribute to economic growth and mutual development.
A major focus of the discussions was increasing trade and investment between the two countries. The two sides acknowledged that stronger commercial ties could create new opportunities for businesses, encourage industrial growth and promote greater private sector collaboration. They also explored ways to improve the investment climate and strengthen economic partnerships that would benefit both nations.
The meeting further highlighted the importance of cooperation beyond economic activities. Ambassador Ordash and President Mahama discussed expanding cultural and humanitarian exchanges to strengthen the relationship between the people of Ghana and Russia. Educational partnerships, cultural programmes and people-to-people engagements were identified as important areas that could deepen mutual understanding and reinforce the long standing friendship between the two countries.
Legal cooperation also featured prominently during the discussions. The two sides examined ways to improve the bilateral legal framework governing cooperation between Ghana and Russia. Strengthening legal agreements is expected to provide greater certainty for investors, support future partnerships and create a more structured environment for collaboration in different sectors.
Preparations for Ghana’s participation in the Third Russia–Africa Summit also formed an important part of the meeting. According to the Russian Embassy, both parties exchanged views on the planned participation of a Ghanaian delegation at the summit, which will bring together African leaders, government officials, investors and business representatives.
The summit is expected to serve as a platform for discussing issues affecting Africa and Russia, including trade, investment, industrialisation, infrastructure development, agriculture, energy, education and technology. It will also provide opportunities for participating countries to strengthen diplomatic relations and identify practical areas for future cooperation.
For Ghana, participation in the summit presents another opportunity to promote its investment potential while strengthening international partnerships that support national development goals. Government officials continue to emphasise the importance of attracting foreign investment, expanding export markets and creating sustainable economic opportunities through strategic international cooperation.
The meeting between Ambassador Ordash and President Mahama also reflected the value of regular diplomatic engagement in maintaining strong international relationships. Courtesy visits by ambassadors often provide opportunities to review existing partnerships, exchange views on global developments and identify new initiatives that can benefit both countries.
Ghana and Russia have maintained diplomatic relations for several decades, cooperating in areas such as education, mining, agriculture, healthcare and technical assistance. Many Ghanaian professionals have also benefited from educational opportunities in Russian institutions over the years, contributing to lasting academic and cultural connections between the two nations.
Observers note that as global economic conditions continue to evolve, countries are placing greater emphasis on strengthening bilateral partnerships that encourage trade, technology transfer and investment. Ghana’s continued engagement with international partners reflects its broader strategy of diversifying economic relationships while creating opportunities for sustainable growth.
The discussions also underscored the role of diplomacy in promoting peaceful cooperation and addressing shared challenges through dialogue. Both governments reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining open communication and expanding collaboration based on mutual respect and common interests.
Although no new agreements were announced during the courtesy visit, the meeting reinforced the strong diplomatic ties between Ghana and Russia and demonstrated the willingness of both countries to continue working together across multiple sectors.
As preparations continue for the Russia–Africa Summit later this year, officials from both governments are expected to sustain engagements aimed at strengthening economic, cultural and institutional cooperation. The discussions between Ambassador Ordash and President Mahama mark another step in the ongoing efforts to build a stronger partnership capable of delivering long-term benefits for both countries and their people.
