The Executive Secretary of the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers, Duncan Amoah, has urged political leaders to stop shielding individuals accused of illegal mining. Speaking on The Big Issue program on Channel One TV on Saturday, July 25, 2026, he stressed that party loyalty must never override national accountability.
His strong warning follows the recent court conviction of NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi. An Accra court sentenced Wontumi to 20 years imprisonment over illegal mining operations tied to Akonta Mining Company Limited.
Duncan Amoah highlighted that polluted river bodies affect every Ghanaian citizen regardless of political affiliation. When the Ghana Water Company pumps treated water into homes, heavy metal pollution threatens everyone equally without checking party cards.
Protecting public health requires complete unity against environmental destruction caused by galamsey operators. Political leaders must stop making excuses for convicted party members when our clean drinking water remains under severe threat.
The NPP has labeled Chairman Wontumi a political prisoner, arguing that court procedures violated his right to a fair trial. However, Amoah insists that seeking public sympathy for convicted offenders weakens judicial independence and discourages state prosecutors.
He cautioned politicians across both the NPP and NDC to allow the judicial system to operate independently. Anyone engaging in illegal mining should expect equal prosecution under Ghanaian law, no matter their political connections or position.
Allowing strict legal enforcement against illegal mining operations helps restore damaged forest reserves and polluted rivers. Party executives should focus on cleaning up the small scale mining sector rather than organizing public protests for offenders.
Putting national development above partisan politics protects our natural resources for future generations. When state institutions enforce environmental laws without political fear or favor, all Ghanaians enjoy a safer and healthier country.
