Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema has paid tribute to Ghana’s founding President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, during a visit to the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park in Accra as part of his three-day state visit to Ghana.
President Nguema visited the historic monument shortly after arriving in the country, describing the occasion as an opportunity to honor one of Africa’s most influential leaders and a pioneer of Pan-Africanism. His visit underscored the enduring significance of Dr Nkrumah’s vision for African unity and cooperation, which continues to inspire leaders across the continent.
The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park serves as the final resting place of Ghana’s first President and his wife, Fathia Nkrumah. Designed by renowned architect Don Arthur, the memorial has become one of Ghana’s most important national landmarks and a symbol of the country’s struggle for independence and commitment to African liberation.
During the visit, President Nguema reflected on Dr Nkrumah’s lasting contribution to the continent’s political and social development. The Ghanaian leader remains widely celebrated for championing African independence movements and promoting unity among newly independent African states during the post colonial era.
The Gabonese President arrived in Accra at the invitation of President John Dramani Mahama for a state visit aimed at strengthening diplomatic and economic relations between Ghana and Gabon. The visit is expected to include bilateral discussions on trade, investment, regional security and cooperation in key sectors of mutual interest.
At the memorial park, President Nguema was received by Madam Ablah Dzifa Gomashie, Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, who welcomed the visiting Head of State on behalf of the Government of Ghana. She accompanied the President during the visit and highlighted the importance of the memorial as a place of national remembrance and African heritage.
Officials at the park provided the Gabonese delegation with historical information about Dr Nkrumah’s life, leadership and contributions to Ghana’s independence. They also explained the significance of the memorial complex, which attracts thousands of local and international visitors every year, including students, researchers, tourists and visiting dignitaries.
President Nguema’s visit to the memorial reflects the strong historical ties shared by many African nations whose independence movements were influenced by Dr Nkrumah’s philosophy of self determination and continental solidarity.
