President John Dramani Mahama and Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations between Ghana and Tanzania following a high-level meeting held on the sidelines of the African Union Extraordinary Health Summit in Accra.
The bilateral discussions, which took place at the Presidency, focused on expanding cooperation in key sectors, including trade, mining, investment and institutional collaboration. Both leaders expressed optimism that stronger partnerships would create new economic opportunities and further deepen the longstanding relationship between the two African nations.
A key outcome of the meeting was the agreement to work towards establishing a Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation between Ghana and Tanzania. The proposed commission is expected to serve as an official platform for coordinating bilateral initiatives, promoting regular dialogue and monitoring the implementation of agreements reached between the two governments.
President Mahama and President Hassan also agreed on the need to increase trade volumes between their countries. They noted that stronger commercial ties would not only benefit businesses but also contribute to economic growth, job creation and regional integration across the African continent.
The leaders acknowledged that while Ghana and Tanzania have maintained cordial diplomatic relations for many years, there remains significant untapped potential for greater economic cooperation. They stressed the importance of creating practical frameworks that encourage investment, facilitate trade and promote knowledge sharing across strategic sectors.
During the discussions, President Mahama highlighted the achievements of the Ghana Gold Board, commonly known as GoldBod, describing it as one of the country’s recent economic success stories. He explained that the institution had played an important role in improving Ghana’s economic fortunes through reforms aimed at strengthening the management and regulation of the gold sector.
The President said Ghana was prepared to share its experience with Tanzania, particularly in the mining industry, where both countries possess significant natural resources. He noted that exchanging knowledge and best practices could help improve resource management, increase value addition and strengthen transparency within the sector.
Mining remains an important contributor to the economies of both Ghana and Tanzania, making cooperation in the industry a natural area for partnership. Officials believe that collaboration could support sustainable resource management while creating opportunities for investment, technology transfer and skills development.
The two leaders also discussed the broader importance of strengthening economic integration among African countries. They noted that enhanced cooperation between African states remains essential to achieving the objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area, which seeks to boost intra-African trade and accelerate industrial development across the continent.
President Mahama reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to working closely with Tanzania on initiatives that promote regional development and economic transformation. He emphasised that partnerships between African countries should focus not only on diplomatic relations but also on practical cooperation that delivers measurable benefits to citizens.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan welcomed Ghana’s willingness to share its expertise and expressed Tanzania’s commitment to expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest. She noted that stronger collaboration between the two countries would contribute to deeper regional integration while creating opportunities for businesses, investors and young entrepreneurs.
Beyond economic matters, the meeting also highlighted the importance of strengthening institutional cooperation through regular consultations between government agencies. The proposed Permanent Joint Commission is expected to facilitate collaboration across multiple sectors, including education, agriculture, tourism, health, infrastructure and technology.
Analysts have observed that bilateral commissions have become increasingly important tools for African governments seeking to translate diplomatic relations into practical development outcomes. Such mechanisms help ensure that agreements reached at the leadership level are implemented through continuous engagement between public institutions.
The meeting took place during the African Union Extraordinary Health Summit, which brought together heads of state and government officials to discuss strengthening healthcare systems across the continent. The summit also provided an opportunity for participating leaders to hold bilateral engagements on issues extending beyond healthcare, including trade, investment and regional cooperation.
Diplomatic observers say meetings of this nature play an important role in reinforcing political goodwill while opening new channels for economic collaboration. The renewed commitment by Ghana and Tanzania to deepen bilateral relations reflects the growing emphasis African countries are placing on partnerships within the continent.
