Ghana Revenue Authority Declares Two Month Amnesty for Uncustomed Vehicles

The cost of driving an unregistered car in Ghana is about to get much higher if you miss the latest regulatory window. The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority has officially announced a comprehensive two-month amnesty program for owners and users of uncustomed vehicles nationwide.

This special grace period offers a rare opportunity for individuals to regularize their vehicle clearance documentation without facing standard financial penalties.

Voluntary Compliance Before the Nationwide Roadside Crackdown

The official amnesty timeline will run strictly from June 1 to July 31 2026. According to the public notice issued by state authorities, the initiative aims to encourage voluntary compliance among drivers using vehicles that entered the country through unapproved routes or bypassed necessary port clearance systems.

This policy waiver completely removes all heavy financial penalties that customs officers would normally impose if they impounded the vehicle. However, vehicle owners must act quickly. The GRA issued a stern warning that once the July 31 deadline expires, the Customs Division will launch a massive, unannounced nationwide inspection exercise targeting vehicles on all major public roads.

Any uncustomed vehicle intercepted during the active roadside operation will be instantly impounded. This aggressive enforcement drive forms part of broader state measures to maximize national revenue mobilization, protect local borders, and systematically curb smuggling syndicates.

Riding around in a vehicle with questionable customs papers is a logical gamble that simply will not pay off this year. For anyone unsure about their current import documentation, the GRA advises visiting the nearest Customs Collection office or making a trip to the main GRA Head Office located near the Accra Sports Stadium at Ministries.

Taking advantage of this temporary executive grace period is the smartest move to protect your investment, keep your car keys in your pocket, and ensure you stay completely on the right side of the law before the enforcement teams hit the streets.
