President John Dramani Mahama is set to embark on a state visit to Jamaica next week as part of efforts to strengthen diplomatic relations between Ghana and the Caribbean nation while participating in activities marking Jamaica’s 64th Independence and Emancipation celebrations.
The visit, scheduled to take place from July 29 to August 3, 2026, underscores the long-standing historical, cultural and political ties shared by Ghana and Jamaica. Both countries have maintained close relations over the years through cooperation in diplomacy, culture, education and trade, with shared African heritage continuing to serve as a foundation for stronger engagement.
According to a statement issued by the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF), President Mahama will receive full state honors during his visit. Preparations for the official ceremonies include Guard of Honour rehearsals and military parades that will feature ceremonial gun salutes at King’s House, the official residence of Jamaica’s Governor-General.
The Jamaica Defence Force explained that the ceremonial firing of guns forms part of established military traditions observed during official state visits by foreign Heads of State. The practice is a longstanding protocol used to recognize visiting leaders and demonstrate respect on behalf of the host nation.
Officials indicated that the ceremonial activities would take place over several days as part of the official programme prepared for the Ghanaian President. The military ceremonies are expected to coincide with Jamaica’s national celebrations, making President Mahama one of the distinguished international guests participating in the commemorative events.
The Defence Force also informed residents living within and around the Corporate Area, particularly communities near King’s House, that they may hear a series of loud explosions during the rehearsal and parade activities. Authorities emphasized that these sounds will result solely from ceremonial gun salutes and should not be interpreted as a security threat.
The statement assured members of the public that all military activities associated with the ceremonies would be conducted under strict safety procedures. The Jamaica Defence Force stressed that the ceremonial salutes pose no danger to residents or visitors and are a routine feature of official state functions involving Heads of State.
Officials further appealed for public understanding and cooperation throughout the period of the ceremonies, acknowledging that temporary inconvenience could arise from the scheduled activities. They expressed appreciation to residents for their patience as Jamaica prepares to host the Ghanaian leader.
President Mahama’s visit is expected to provide an opportunity for both governments to deepen bilateral cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
