Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, has officially apologized to President John Dramani Mahama following a recent High Court ruling. Reports from his legal team confirm that the politician is actively seeking a presidential pardon after receiving a heavy sentence.
The Accra High Court recently handed Wontumi a twenty year prison term in hard labour for illegal mining activities involving his Akonta Mining firm. The court found him guilty of violating the Minerals and Mining Act by operating without mandatory ministerial approval on the Samreboi concession.
Following the ruling, spokesperson updates confirm Wontumi expressed remorse over past public statements made against the President. He is now appealing to executive authority for clemency to reduce his twenty year prison sentence.
However, legal experts and public observers emphasize that executive pardon power remains entirely separate from independent judicial decisions. The courts evaluated documented evidence produced during trial, resulting in a firm legal conviction that stands on strict statutory merits.
While Wontumi hopes for presidential intervention, legal analysts stress that judicial outcomes reflect statutory enforcement rather than political rivalry. The public continues to monitor whether the executive arm will consider the pardon plea or let the court judgment stand fully.
