The Ministry of Health has officially closed down the Techiman Krobo Nursing Training College until further notice following severe student unrest in the Bono East Region.
The immediate shutdown order came on Wednesday, July 29, after persistent disturbances disrupted academic activities on campus. Management directed all students to pack their belongings and vacate the school premises peacefully by 5:00 p.m.
Tensions escalated on Monday, July 27, when trainees organized a heavy protest demanding the immediate removal of the principal, Ellen Dwamena. Students accused her of autocratic leadership, worsening campus conditions, and imposing extra charges for utilities that school fees already covered.
The demonstration quickly turned violent after some students allegedly threw stones at police officers deployed to control the crowd. Officers responded by firing gunshots into the air to disperse the protesting students, leading to multiple arrests on campus.
Despite earlier intervention meetings involving the Regional Security Council and health sector stakeholders, dialogue failed to restore discipline. The Ministry explained that closing the institution became necessary to safeguard lives, protect public property, and allow authorities to investigate the underlying causes of the violent clash thoroughly.
