The Black Stars have left camp after Morocco cancelled the planned international friendly scheduled for October 4 in Tangier. The cancellation was confirmed by multiple Ghanaian reports on September 29, although the Moroccan Football Federation has not publicly given a reason for calling off the match.
The development comes at a frustrating time for Ghana. The Morocco game was expected to give Carlos Queiroz another opportunity to work with his players and assess the squad after the opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The Ghana Football Association had earlier confirmed the fixture and said both countries would use the match to assess their squads.
Another Friendly Gone
The Morocco cancellation also means Ghana has now lost two planned friendlies around this international window. The Black Stars had initially been linked with a friendly against Tanzania, but that fixture did not materialise after the two football associations failed to reach a final agreement.
For Queiroz, this is not ideal. The Portuguese coach returned to lead the Black Stars in September after the Ghana Football Association agreed to continue with him following the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He came into the new assignment with the task of preparing Ghana for the 2027 AFCON qualifiers and rebuilding the team around a new phase.
What It Means for Carlos Queiroz
The timing makes the situation even more important. Ghana lost 2 0 to Côte d’Ivoire before suffering a 4 2 defeat to The Gambia, leaving the Black Stars without a point from their opening two Group C matches. The team now has less competitive preparation available before the next AFCON qualifying window.
Queiroz had already stressed the importance of players being physically prepared and involved in competitive football when selecting his squad. A friendly against Morocco would therefore have offered valuable minutes for players, while also giving the technical team another chance to test combinations and identify areas that need improvement.
For Ghanaian football supporters, the bigger concern is now preparation. Losing one friendly can happen in international football, but losing both the Tanzania opportunity and the Morocco game leaves the Black Stars with fewer chances to work on the problems exposed during the qualifiers. The GFA will now need to consider how best to prepare Queiroz and his squad for their next competitive assignments.
