Reports circulated widely that Sammi Awuku had been picked up by the Economic and Organised Crime Office. Rumours claimed the Akuapem North Member of Parliament and former National Lottery Authority boss faced detention over alleged financial irregularities. Social media users started forwarding the scary stories everywhere without asking questions.
The respected politician quickly laughed off the fake stories in a viral video released on Sunday, August 16. He appeared live in Kumasi alongside popular National Democratic Congress sympathiser Appiah Stadium to prove his freedom. His public appearance immediately crushed all the false claims circulating online.
Mr Awuku questioned how anyone could claim he suffered arrest on Saturday when he was busy voting. He explained that he spent the entire Saturday participating actively in the regional elections organized by his party. Seeing him chilling happily in Kumasi made the detention story look like a big joke.
