The Accra Metropolitan Assembly has taken decisive action by arresting a forty-six year old coconut seller, Emmanuel Awotwi, for turning a major public walkway into an unauthorized storage facility.
Enforcement officers from the Assembly intercepted the trader along the busy Professor John Evans Atta Mills High Street, right near the Arts Centre. Taskforce members discovered over five hundred coconuts blocking the bus stop, making it nearly impossible for commuters to move freely.
According to the Assembly, Awotwi violated the Control of Hawkers By-law of 2017. He explained that he routinely brings coconut consignments from Takoradi to Accra for local retail distribution. However, he failed to clear the night offload before morning enforcement teams arrived.
Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey strongly criticized the growing misuse of transport hubs as personal storage spaces within the Central Business District. He emphasized that blocking bus stops creates unnecessary vehicular traffic and serious foot congestion for everyday workers.
The Mayor also raised critical public health concerns regarding the improper disposal of heavy coconut husks into open gutters and street drains. City authorities warned that anyone caught trading or storing goods in unauthorized public spaces will face immediate arrest and full prosecution under municipal laws.
