The global music landscape is shifting rapidly, and the world’s most prestigious music awards show is evolving to keep pace.
The Recording Academy has announced sweeping structural updates to the voting process and eligibility rules ahead of the 69th annual Grammy Awards. Set to air live on February 7, 2027, from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, this ceremony marks one of the biggest shake-ups in recent history.
A major headline adjustment directly addresses the highly competitive Best New Artist category. Aspiring musical acts can now submit their work for nomination consideration up to four times across their developmental career instead of the previous cap of three. This strategic revision allows greater industry flexibility, recognizing that modern artist breakthrough timelines look vastly different than they did in past generations.

The Recording Academy is also introducing five entirely new categories to better reflect dynamic shifts in global music genres. The brand new Best Asian Pop Music Performance field will formally recognize commercial formats like K-pop, J-pop, and C-pop recorded in Asian languages. Additionally, songwriters behind fresh Spanish-language tracks will find a dedicated space following the addition of the Best Latin Song category.
The remaining additions fine-tune existing genres to preserve artistic heritage while embracing modern creative trends. The new Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance category separates collaborative group records from solo acts.
Meanwhile, the introduction of Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance and Best Traditional Folk Album will properly insulate heritage styles from contemporary folk and modern Americana.
Beyond fresh categories, voting members with verified professional credits across multiple fields are gaining a brand new opt-in system called Ballot Plus. This upgrade allows authorized professionals to vote in up to 15 peer-related categories instead of the traditional limit of 10.
The decision amplifies the voice of active, multi-genre music creators while completely maintaining the rigorous standards of the peer-review process.
The guidelines for physical album packaging and production credits have also received a long-awaited upgrade. The threshold of newly recorded material required for a project to qualify as an album has dropped from 75% to 66%. Furthermore, songwriters and composers will now rightfully receive official Grammy statuettes alongside producers and engineers when their collaborative albums win genre fields.
In a nod to modern music consumption, digital-only releases are now fully eligible for consideration in the Best Album Notes and Best Historical Album categories. Musicians aiming for the 2027 award season should note that the project submission eligibility period spans from August 31, 2025, to August 28, 2026. The upcoming live broadcast will simulcast across ABC, Disney+, and Hulu, offering fans a more inclusive celebration of global sound.
